Centre for Environment, Fisheries & Aquaculture Science (Cefas)
Cefas is an internationally renowned aquatic scientific research and consultancy centre aiming to be the prime source of high quality science used to conserve and enhance the aquatic environment, promote sustainable management of its natural resources, and protect the public from aquatic contaminants. Cefas is involved in a number of MPA relevant projects including PROTECT.
Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (defra)
The marine environment and fisheries department of Defra are responsible for policy concerning marine biodiversity, the marine environment and marine fisheries. Defra prepared the Marine Bill, which has now been enacted, to help to deliver the Government's vision for the marine environment.
Department of Environment (Northern Ireland) (DOE)
The Department of Environment (Northern Ireland) is responisble for formulates and implements Northern Ireland's environmental policy and legislation.
English Heritage (EH)
English Heritage is the Government's statutory adviser on the historic environment. English Heritage exists to protect and promote England's spectacular historic environment and ensure that its past is researched and understood.
Environment Agency (EA)
The Environment Agency has an important role in conservation and ecology and is working towards cleaner coasts and healthier seas. The Environment Agency is also involved in marine fisheries enforcement in certain estuaries and is generally responsible for the management of salmonid and eel fisheries.
The Forestry Commission is the government department responsible for the protection and expansion of Britain's forests and woodlands.
Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC)
The Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) is the statutory adviser to Government on UK and international nature conservation. JNCC is responsible for undertaking work in connection with the surveillance and mapping of marine habitats and landscapes, the collation and analysis of marine data, the conservation of marine species, the identification of marine protected areas and advising on their subsequent protection and management.
Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA)
NIEA (formerely the Environment and Heritage Service) takes the lead in advising on, and in implementing, the Government's environmental policy and strategy in Northern Ireland. The NIEA are responsible for the management of Strangford Lough, Ireland's first Marine Natural Reserve.
Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA)
SEPA are Scotland's environmental regulator and adviser, and are responsible to the Scottish Parliament through Ministers. As well as their role in controlling pollution, they work with others to protect and improve the environment.
Scottish Executive (SE)
The Scottish Executive is the devolved government for Scotland. The Marine Biodiversity Policy and Sustainable Management team is responsible for policies that preserve marine habitats and the animals that are supported by them, including marine protected areas.
